Ensemble 1684 (Leipzig)

The Ensemble 1684, founded by Markus Antler and the director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Choir, Gregor Meyer, is dedicated primarily to the cultivation of Baroque music before the time of Johann Sebastian Bach. The focus is on Central German composers whose works are rarely performed or have even fallen into oblivion. The current focus is on the oeuvre of Johann Rosenmüller, who shaped the second half of the 17th century like hardly any other composer of his time. The ensemble is also actively engaged in research and editorial work on Rosenmüller in particular; most of the works performed are newly prepared for the programs from original sources and in some cases also reconstructed. The artists of Ensemble 1684 also see themselves as ambassadors of baroque music. They regularly initiate cooperation projects with choirs and school ensembles along with accessible concert formats in order to introduce as many people as possible to the richness of Central German baroque music.

The ensemble is a regular guest at important national and international festivals, such as the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Organ Festival, the MDR Music Summer, the Staufen Music Week, etc. Two recordings with cross-sections of Rosenmüller’s oeuvre have been released to date, and a third CD is scheduled for summer 2023.
