Barockensemble (D)

The Musical World of the 17th and 18th Centuries

The natural trumpets used by the ensemble correspond to the instruments heard during the time of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, and George Frideric Handel. As they are played without valves, their distinctive sound is shaped entirely by the natural harmonic series. Together with the rich sonorities of the baroque timpani, they recreate the magnificent ceremonial sound that once accompanied court festivities, church celebrations, and grand concerts throughout the Baroque period.

The ensemble’s musicians engage extensively with historical sources, period playing techniques, and stylistically informed interpretation. Their work extends beyond the use of historical instruments to include questions of articulation, ornamentation, tonal balance, and musical rhetoric. Their aim is to come as close as possible to the original sound ideals of the composers and to offer audiences an authentic listening experience.

The ensemble’s repertoire includes festive tower and court music, works from the Central German Baroque tradition, and compositions for trumpets and timpani. Combining scholarly expertise with a genuine passion for music-making, the ensemble continues Leipzig’s distinguished musical heritage and brings the fascinating sound world of the Baroque to life in all its brilliance.
